SUCCESS STORIES
– OREO AND
GINGER
|
|
|
Really we consider
that Loree started
us along the path of
being in love with
the Shih Tzu breed.
I was seeking to
adopt a dog (any
dog) after my
beloved Chihuahua
mix died of cancer a
number of years ago.
Loree happened to
have Sammy – a
rescue Shih Tzu who
was an adorable
pooch with some
special needs.
Through Sammy, my
boyfriend and I fell
in love with the
breed.
When we ultimately
lost Sammy to old
age, we found our
second Shih Tzu on
our own. But
when it came time to
give Oreo a
companion, we
ultimately came back
to Loree and after
several trips to San
Jose from San
Francisco – were
united with Ginger.
The companionship we
were hoping for did
evolve fairly
quickly between the
two dogs, and we
know our little Oreo
is now much happier
with Ginger as his
buddy. The
icing on the cake
was having Ginger
pass her therapy dog
classes with flying
colors, and being
able to take both
little dogs out
together to do
therapy work.
Ginger is now a
full-fledged therapy
dog for the San
Francisco SPCA,
alongside our other
Shih Tzu Oreo who
has been doing this
several years and
who is showing her
the ropes.
They made quite an
impact as a twosome
this past Saturday
at a convent where
they went from
bedroom to bedroom
visiting elderly
nuns. Oreo and
Ginger would snuggle
alongside the nuns
who were in beds or
lounge chairs.
Oreo would stretch
out on one side of a
resident and Ginger
would be on the
other side.
First Oreo and then
Ginger would extend
their front paws
forward, get even
more comfortable,
and gaze upon the
nuns with those
beautiful Shih Tzu
faces. It was
very moving to see.
Ginger is our doggy
princess that we
shamefully shower
with pink collars
and accessories,
pink toys and pink
beds. Her
official SF/SPCA
Animal Assistance
Therapy vest is on
order – in 'demure
pink'.
